WHAT IS CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING
Co-operative learning is an active learning strategy which involves team-based activities,in which partners or group-members work together to solve problems.This ensures that learners really understand the concepts of being covered. Team learning is especially beneficial (useful)in that 'weaker' learners are presented with the material from a source other than the teacher (I.e their partner/group mates) and 'stronger' learners reinforce their knowledge by explaining the material to others.
In order to help you understand the concepts of Co-operative learning look at the this Scenario :
A primary 3 teacher is teaching about types of food.The teacher asks the learners to sit in groups of four. In each group,the teacher asks each member to name two types of foods eaten in their homes.and make a list of foods for each group.After about 6 minutes the teacher asks each group to present its list to the rest of the class while the teacher summarises on a chart. The teacher uses the chart to explain types of food and hang the chart on the wall as teaching aids.
Look at the second Scenario:
Another primary 3 teacher is handling the same topic on types of food,he stands in front of the class,tells the class the types of food in the community,he writes noted on the bord and asks the learners to copy in their notebooks'
If you critically look at two Scenarios you will find out that:
1-The teacher in Scenario 1 involved all his learners in his lesson while the teacher in Scenario 2 dominated the whole lesson.
2-Teacher in Scenario 1 allowed his learners to help each others while teacher in Scenario 2 didn't allowed his learners to say anything.
